Introduction

You are a scientist working at Wonka.  With the holidays approaching, you have been given the task of developing a new product that is unique in taste and style.  You must work hard in the lab testing and retesting until you come up with the sweet solution.

Task

You will be working with a partner to create a brochure to submit to your supervisor for your new product.  You will discover many aspects about creating a new product.  Is it a mixture or solution? What products you are using and their ph levels, chemical reactions that might occur, and what process occurs in making a new product for the market.

In order to complete this experiment, you must follow procedures to make sure you are meeting protocol.  Good luck on your new product.  You could become famous and have the new product named after you if you are successful!!

Record all your observations on the worksheet provided.

Process

All matter consists of particles.  All matter consists as a state.  List the three types of matter and list two properties for each.

How can purple cabbage help you?  What is litmus paper used for?  What is an acid?  You will investigate acids and bases to make sure the product is safe and editable.  Research the above questions and record your answers and definitions you have discovered. Choose 4 ingredients and state what ph level they are.  Does this mean they are an acid or base?  Include a picture of the scale used for indicating acids and bases.

What is a solution?  What is a mixture?  Can we separate them once they have been mixed together?  If so, how?  Test four different solutions that you will be using for your product to find out what ingredients mix well.  Can they be separated once you have mixed them?  Explain why or why not and what method you will use.

In the brochure, answer the questions above and list the ingredients you tried to combine and how it worked on the worksheet.

Charcoal As you begin to mix your ingredients you may have a chemical reaction occur.  What factors determine whether this has occurred?  List 3 examples of how you know a chemical reaction has occurred.  Did your product have a chemical reaction during the mixing or baking? Explain.

Conclusion

You have completed all the testing and have worked on the creation of the new product.  Consider what is involved in making a new product.  Do you think it is easy to create a new product?  What must be considered to make it successful to the consumer?  Think about the packaging that you will use. Has completing this website given you a new outlook on how chemistry is involved in the real world?  Write a reflection about your experiences you have encountered while doing this project.
