Introduction:

Have you ever wondered how a small little red wiggler worm can chow down on something as big as an apple? Don’t worry they don’t smell, and they don’t roam around. Red worms are happy to stay right in their little bin chewing away on your food scraps. Enter the world of composting and find out what we need to do to become good environmentalist!!

Task:

Your task is to learn all you can about vermicomposting. You will represent what you learn in a pamphlet.  The pamphlet will have six sides, and each side will contain different facts about various ‘worm topics’.  As you travel through this web quest you will need to find information about the following:

-         Worm habitat

-         Worm food

-         Benefits of vermicomposting

-         How to make your own composter

-         How to maintain your worm bin

Process:

1.    Work Habitat- list 3 places you can locate worms for your project

2.    Worm food- List a minimum of 3 foods your worms will eat

3.    Benefits of vermicomposting- why is it helpful to do vermicomposting?  List 3 reasons why.

4.    How to make your own composter- There are 3 items you will need to get started in this process.  List them and give three facts for each.

5.    Maintaining your Worm Bin- List 3 things you will need to do to keep your composting alive and active.

 

 Be prepared to share your pamphlet with others to educate them about the benefits of vermicomposting.

Conclusion:

 

After you have finished this project you will have learned not only about vermicomposting, but will have also have gained an understanding of the benefits of composting in general. You will gain knowledge about why it is important to compost and the impact of decreasing the amount of garbage we throw out. What advice would you give as an environmentalist about how to reduce our garbage?  What can we do as a society?  Make some suggestions that could be presented to your community.
