Introduction

You are the CEO of Epcor, the electricity provider in your city.  You have been invited to speak to a grade 5 class about some important areas of Electricity.    Keeping in mind that the students are in grade 5, you know that your presentation must be interesting and entertaining.

Task

You have decided to create a Power point presentation to help keep the students’ attention.  You have decided to include colourful backgrounds, animations and pictures to make it more interesting. The presentation must only be 15 minutes so you have decided to only cover the following components of electricity to give them an overall understanding of electricity:

*    What is electricity?

*    How is electricity formed?

*    How does electricity get to your house?

*    Locating and reading the metre

*    Potential Dangers

*    Conserving Electricity

Process

Exploring Electricity

Use the student worksheet to help record the information.  Remember, if you use terms that you think the students won’t understand review the definitions so that you will be able to explain them.

Task 1

You will need to zap through the following sites and find out the following information for the first slide: Define what electricity is and how it was discovered.

Task 2

Did you ever wonder how we get the energy to play the radio or turn on a lamp?  Find out 3 types of electricity and how it gets to your home or school.  Don’t forget to include a picture!!

Task 3

The amount of electricity used at your home or school is tracked on a meter.  You will be asking students to find out how much electricity is being used at

 home and school for 5 days.  They must ask their custodian to show the school’s meter. The number will be recorded on Monday morning, then again at the end of the day on Friday.  The same will be done at home (make sure you use the correct term for how electricity is measured).  The numbers will be compared and then you will ask them to proceed to the next task to see how someone can cut down these numbers.

Task 4

The cost of electricity is on the rise.  How can students help conserve electricity at home and at school.  List 5 ways for each.

Task 5

 Have you ever been told not to stick a fork in the outlet?  Or not to put a radio near water?  You must inform the students of the safety around the home and their environment so they can teach others. Read the following information about Safety.  Print the home safety checklist and complete it at your home.  You will need to make the students aware of potential dangers that they might encounter at home or at school.  List 5 potential dangers and common safety practices to avoid them.

Task 6

After doing the home safety checklist and looking at the potential dangers of electricity you will list 3 ways to safe proof your home against electrical dangers.

Allow the student to play Make the Safe Choice game to test your knowledge when they have finished with the presentation.

Presentation

Presenting to the whole class can make you nervous.  Planning ahead is the key to a good presentation.  Use the notes pages in PowerPoint to write out what you will say during your presentation.

When you present to the class make sure you:

*    Don’t read your presentation

*    Look at your audience

*    Don’t talk too quickly

*    Allow your audience to ask questions
