Introduction

Mrs. Timms loves her garden a great deal. However, the petunias in her garden are drooping and are not looking very healthy. Mrs. Timms is very concerned as she loves her garden and all the lovely plants in it. Mrs. Timms went to see Lois Hole for advice about this very big problem. Mrs. Hole said that she needs to add compost to the soil in her garden. Mrs. Timms then went to her Grade Four class with this advice. The Grade Four class loves to help Mrs. Timms as they are always rewarded with smiles.

Process

As environmentalists you will complete the following steps to achieve the task you have been given:

1.     Making your composter-  You must teach others how they will make their own composter.  List 2 types of containers they could use to begin.  Once they have chosen one the next step is to decide what type of bedding to use.  Give 3 examples of what can be used and make sure you tell them what is important about your bedding for the worms to survive!!  The last important part step in making the composter, is of course the worms.  Give 2 examples of what types of worms could be used and how many.  To make them aware of the special worms they are using, let them know 2 facts about the worms.

2.     You must also teach the world about maintaining their composter.  List 3 facts so they are confident that the composter will continue to survive.

3.     What is the best habitat to find the red wrigglers?  List 3 places people can find the juicy worms and why they can find them there.

4.     What will you feed these hungry worms?  Give 4 examples of what they can eat and 4 examples of what not to feed them.

5.     Why should we even compost?  List 3 reasons why the red wrigglers are important in nature.
